Choosing the Right Ecommerce Integration Solution for QuickBooks

 

Ecommerce – which is really just a buzzword that describes selling goods and services online – holds huge potential for small businesses. Whether you’re an online-only retailer who’s just starting out, or whether you’re a brick-and-mortar business that wants to expand into the online marketplace, you need the right tools. The right ecommerce package will make a huge difference not only in your business processes, but it can impact your sales, as well.

So, what do you need to look at when choosing an ecommerce integration solution? Obviously, you start narrowing down the list based on QuickBooks compatibility. Yet, a large percentage of ecommerce solutions either integrate with QuickBooks or claim to do so. You need to dig a bit deeper.

Consider the following when making your choice:

  • How integrated is the solution with QuickBooks? Some ecommerce solutions only pass sales information to QuickBooks, while others cover everything from customer data to inventory tracking. Try to choose as robust a solution as possible.
  • How secure is the solution? While your QuickBooks data isn’t at any risk, you still need a secure ecommerce solution. At a minimum, the solution should be PCI complaint. This is the minimum level of security that credit card companies expect from websites.
  • Does the solution offer the necessary merchant payment systems or payment gateways? If you have a merchant processing account, you need an ecommerce solution that can support that account. Likewise, if you’re hoping to use a particular payment gateway, your solution needs to support that gateway.
  • Does the solution meet your other requirements? You may have a large product catalog, for example. You want an ecommerce solution that can handle that catalog. You might need an ecommerce solution that requires minimal technical knowledge to implement. Identify your ecommerce priorities to further narrow the field.

Your choice of ecommerce solution will determine just how efficient your web business is going to be. Don’t simply choose the first or cheapest solution and hope it works. Pick the right solution from the start and it will pay off over the long run.
